Ōpito Bay Ratepayers Association

Location of main site: Dune planting West of Stewart Stream in Ōpito Bay. Pest control (75 traps) length of Ōpito Bay Beach and into hinterland.

Purpose of the group: To ensure dune system is protected by planting native dune binding species and eliminate exotic plant species that have taken hold. Eliminate mammalian pest species like rats, stoats, ferrets, hedgehogs and possums so forest and shore birds can thrive.

About the group: We currently (2021) have around 20 volunteers doing dune restoration and five involved with mammallian pest control. We have received funding from WRC for the last five years for traps and baits. Key lesson we have learnt is that the community, once a project is identified and explained the residents, comes on board to volunteer. They see it as a positive opportunity to help improve the environment of the Bay.
